There has never been a better time to start a company. The venture industry raised $74 billion in the U.S. in 2020, blowing past the previous high of $68 billion. What are the key VC trends to watch for in 2021, and why is now uniquely compelling for a startup?

A few that stand out:

  • Record amounts of capital – which will provide more resources for the entire ecosystem of startups and high-growth companies
  • Growing divide between the haves and have-notes – with particularly strong interest in unicorns, “soon-icorns,” and pre-IPO candidates
  • SPACs – which will compete with private equity for new deals, but will also provide more exits for portfolio companies
  • Sector focus – with a particular focus on life sciences, automation, AI, and my favorite category – supply chain

Markets have never been more competitive. And yet talented teams, capital partners, and startup resources have never been more available for founders with compelling ideas.
